Sounds and Smells of Zone 18

Since the guys have been staying at the ministry center in Zone 18, we have taken notice of a few distinct sounds and smells that we would like to share with you. Join us for this sensory journey:
1. The waftering odor of cannabis wafting in the warm night air into our bedroom windows.

2. The sound of dogs barking incessantly through the night.

3. The smell of fresh tortillas as the ladies in the shop down the street worked the late shift. This one was good!

4. The sound of fireworks and/or gunfire at 4am that made me jump out of his bed like I was having a “Nam” flash back! Eduardo, who was sleeping above me in the bunk bed says, “Pastor John, I am going to have to pray for you. Were you ever in Desert Storm?…seriously.

5. The smell of the brothers feet who opted to wait until the morning for a shower.

6. The sound of the central American alarm clock at 5:30 am, the majestic rooster! Where’s my machete?

Don’t worry, the girls told us that they slept like babies in the comfort of Jose’s gated community apartment. Lucky!

We made it…Safe and Sound

Sorry, I didn’t post sooner, but we had some technical difficulties. Here was my post from last night:

Well, it´s official. We are now on terra firma in Guatemala City! All 23 of us made it through the airport gauntlet and arrived safely with all 47 packed bags in tow. Everything went amazingly smooth…like butter actually and we are all tucked away in our places for the night. 7 of the guys are at the ministry center in Zone 18 on the floor while the rest of the girls and Larry are at Jose´s place in bunk beds. They may have the nicer place to stay, but we don´t have to get up as early as they do and we are all definitely fine with that. Jose and his friend, Eduardo, have been gracious guests. Jose took us to the local chicken place, Pollo Campero, for a late lunch and then gave us a mini tour of the area around his home.

While we rode in our bus, he shared some background on Guatemala, the work of God in the city, and the part that God has given him to play. He shared stories of changed lives and rising hope. One lady who contracted HIV from a man who never told her he was positive, told Jose that she wanted him to take care of her kids when she dies. She is now a born again believer, but knows that she may not have very long to live. There are definitely some heart breaking stories coming out of Zone 18, but there is also hope arising because of the work of people like Jose who refuse to give up when it seems everyone else has. He believes that Zone 18 will no longer be known as the ¨red zone¨ because of crime and violence, but will be known as the ¨red zone¨ because the blood of Jesus Christ has cleansed the people and the area from sin. Let´s dream that dream with him and believe God to see it come to pass! Thank you for your continued prayer for us. We are excited to dive right into the work tomorrow. Until then, Dios le bendiga!

48 Hour Countdown to Guatemala

Well the moment is now here people. We have been preparing as a team for months and now we are ready to ship out…all 28 of us…Moms, Dads, Kids, Teachers, Preachers, Businessmen, College Students, first time explorers and old pros. What a crew!
On Sunday morning at 0 dark thirty we will be hitting the airport with massive amounts of luggage, 500 pairs of shoes for the kids, and a boat load of smiles to start the mission that God has given us.

Our hosts, mi hermano, Jose Armas, and his team at Hope for Guatemala have been losing sleep in anticipation of our visit and we will all be glad when we are finally together. Much thanks to all of you who have supported the team with your prayers, finances, and encouragement!
Once we are on the ground, we will be helping to feed and minister to over 150 kids a day, we are also holding a three day blowout soccer camp for the local teens, painting Bible verses and cartoon characters on the walls of a local elemetary school (yes a public school…this aint America- we can actually do this without being sued), preaching at local churches, ministering house to house in the “worse part of Guatemala City” and topping it all off with an all day crazy big festival called the “Hope Festival” right smack dab in the middle of town. There will be free food, free medical clinics, the shoes for the kids thanks to our partnership with Samaritan’s Feet, Spanish singers and bands, inflatables, and of course, the Good News of Jesus Christ covering everything! At the end of the night, I will give the message of salvation to the people of Zone 18 as my team ministers in the crowd.
Each day I am going to attempt to blog our journey so that you can come along for the ride and keep us in prayer. Are you ready? Then let’s do this! Let the countdown begin!

House of Mourning or House of Partying?

At the recent funeral of my 27 year old brother in law, I shared a selection from the book of Ecclesiastes.
The phrase “the house of mourning” had been on my mind for months prior to the tragic events that unfolded over the past week. It was something I couldn’t shake. Here is the scripture I was drawn to:

“It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.” Eccl 7:2-4

What the writer wants us to realize that until we have settled the issues of life and death in our hearts then we are foolish to live like we are untouchable. Death is the destiny of every man. We must all take this to heart.
We may be able to entertain ourselves with various diversions and partying, with drinking and drugging our problems away, but we are only hiding from the reality we must all face. We are not indestructible. We are more than our bodies. We have eternity in our hearts. We must answer to our Creator. That’s why the writer says that the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure. He wants to escape. He doesn’t want to feel the pain of mourning, of laying reality to heart, of checking his lifestyle in regards to being responsible to the one who gave Him life in the first place. He doesn’t want to be accountable, and in the same way we ignore the check engine light in our cars, he is only prolonging the inevitable.

It’s been said alot, but it’s worth repeating, “Our hearts are truly restless until they find their rest in God.” If we will go to the house of mourning first and get right with God, if we will take eternal issues to heart, God will give us more than the “house of partying, drinking, drugging, and pleasure,” could have ever given us. We will be known among the wise. We will be truly free.

A Deeper Dose of Personal Reality

It’s been a little while since my last post. We just returned from the funeral of my brother in law, my wife’s younger brother. He died unexpectantly at 27 years old. His father found him laying on the floor of his apartment. It was an accidental death and it has rocked our family’s world. What is even crazier about the whole situation is that one of his former roommates died just a few months earlier. It just doesn’t seem real. How could someone pass away that young from something so senseless?

It made me recall the time in my life where I realized all of the hundreds of times that God spared me from my own bad decisions. I remember waking up from a druken stupor trying to figure out how I got home and in bed and how I got everyone else home as well. I remember thinking, “I could have easily died last night.” It put a fear in my heart. Was I ready to die? But just like most people, after a few days, that feeling went away as I convinced myself that it would never happen to me. Others, but not me. Thank God that by his grace I finally was convinced that I was ‘skating on thin ice’ and that my life was not promised to me. I became convinced that I was living a senseless, purposeless life without God and without hope in the world. I can tell you that he saved me from my self, from my sin.

This situation also made me take a closer look at my relationships and my responsibility to the people God places in my life, even the passing momentary daily encounters. I felt especially convicted that we must push past people’s “force field” of rejection at times and speak what God gives us to speak. We must boldly speak the truth in love and continuously let people know that we love them, that God loves them, and that we are here for them. We must tell them the truth even if it hurts, even if it will invite rejection, because healthy relationships can only be built on the basis on honesty and transparency.

When referencing sharing our faith, alot of people quote Francis of Assisi, “Preach the Gospel at all Times, Use Words if Necessary”. Someone else has put a different twist on that saying. I agree with it more than ever, “Preach the Gospel at All Times, Use Words They are Necessary.

Speaking of Africa: Back to Reality

This world truly is a crazy place. In one part you have Disney World and all of its pleasure, fun, and entertainment, and in another part you have Sudan with it’s genocide, suffering, and pain.
What extremes!
It is a healthy thing for us as Christians to keep this reality before our eyes and to realize that we are not on this earth only for our pleasure, but to know and act upon the fact that we are “blessed to be a blessing” and with “great power comes great responsibility.”
If you haven’t heard of Darfur, Sudan and the genocide, take some time to visit http://www.savedarfur.org inform yourself, pray, and take action! It’s the least we can do.

Just In From Orlando

Hi Folks,

Jacqueline and I just made it back from Orlando. We had a great time of relaxation at the Grand Floridian just outside of Disney. My company, the Hendrick Group, held their annual President’s Club Awards Trip where they recognized the “best of the best” in sales. I was blessed to be a new member of the club this year and also a part of the Rookie Club since this was my first year with the company.
Did you know that Hendrick Motorsports is the winningest team in all of sports? They just announced…over 150 wins together as a team…Wow! It’s great to work for a winning company.
I have to tell you, looking back over the last year, I know that everything I did was by the grace of God! Granted I work hard at what I do, but to have a young family, volunteer at the church, work the long hours of the sales industry, and keep it all together…it has to be God! Most of the other guys at the event have been at this thing alot longer than I have. They have grown kids and are working on retiring. I am just getting started! Most of the other younger guys that were there were either not married, had no children, or had no life outside of the dealership.
I give credit to anyone who lasts more than 6 months in intense straight commission jobs. It’s tough mentally and can be tough on the family. But all thanks be to God who gives me grace and mercy in this season of life to come out on top. Without Him, I can do nothing! But through Him, I can “do all things well.”
Well, the feasting and fame is over. I am looking forward to leading our FHC missions team to Guatemala this coming April. It’s time to fast! Help me Lord! :)
I hope to post more pictures soon. Love yall!

Is It Possible to Live a Positive and Happy Life Apart From God?

Can we live a happy satisfying life apart from surrendering to God’s will? By the way some Christians talk, you wouldn’t think so. But we are mistaken if we think everyone we talk to, especially in America, has a problem with the lifestyle they are living! Many are very comfortable and don’t feel that they need the “God factor” to make it. In many ways they are right. All around us, we see people that are happy and very content to live their peaceful prosperous life without God. They do well in business, have solid relationships, and prosper materially.

So, for me, the bottom line answer to the question is Yes. Yes we can prosper, pick and choose our morality based on the situation, have good relationships, and even be “spiritual” and religious apart from submitting ourselves to God, but this doesn’t mean that we can live this type of life without consequences. God has declared that it is in His character to do good to people, even to His enemies. He makes “His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust” (See Matt 5). Therefore, just because everything seems to be “working” in our lives doesn’t mean that there is nothing wrong.

When we live our lives based on pragmatism, we are on a slippery slope. This means we live based solely on “what works for me” rather than based on the unchangeable foundation of God’s Word. It’s easy to pick and choose what we want in regards to morality and we may even see success.

Some people even live according to many of God’s principles, but don’t believe in God! They live by “the golden rule” which comes from the teachings of Jesus or they are giving people. Because of these things, we may see prosperity come to them even when they are not living for God. God’s principles and laws work, period. His virtues are good for men to live by. What many who espouse a positive view on life apart from God don’t see is that neglecting their relationship to God will eventually catch up with them.

In Psalm 73, the writer had to check Himself when he saw people prospering in life apart from God. He compared his life as a believer to the life of those who didn’t acknowledge God. He saw that they were prosperous, healthy, free from any burden, carefree, and increasing in wealth. This believer experienced God’s goodness and prosperity in his life as well, but he also sometimes felt that he kept his heart pure in vain. He felt plagued, punished, and oppressed compared to those who had no care for God.

He wanted to speak out about this to God, but then he remembered others who have suffered for righteousness that came before him. The believer was silently rebuked by their faith in the midst of a “crooked and perverse generation”. Then he entered into the house of God and came to his senses. He realized the final destiny of the “positive people” who didn’t know God. All of the temporary pleasures and happiness they sought would amount to nothing after death came to claim them.

The believer went from being envious to feeling grieved, embittered, senseless, and ignorant. Although those without God may experience pleasure, feel free, and enjoy the good things of life, in the end they will never know these things again. They never acknowledged that it was God, their creator, that gave them the ability to live, move, breath, and experience life. They took the work of Christ Jesus for granted and never acknowledged their need for the Savior.

They choose not to move beyond life being more than doing something positive, feeling positive, and thinking positive. Therefore they will be eternally separated from God and the benefits He gave that they never acknowledged Him for.

The Brownsville Revival

A Response to: What Happened to Brownsville’s Fire?  By J. Lee Grady

God is still moving through many of the people who have been affected by the Brownsville or Pensacola revival.

They are the “nameless, faceless” ones who are plowing, sowing, and reaping in harvest fields around the world.

God gave us a great gift when He visited Pensacola the way He did back then. It’s up to us what kind of legacy we leave.

If we did not move on with God, then we were bound to be hurt. We had the choice whether or not we would be offended by a whole host of things.

Secondly, Revival is not about the place…Pensacola….the building….Brownsville Assembly; it’s about the people.  Millions were were touched by God in this place.

We have moved into the places God has prepared for us, not with allegiance to a building or a place, but to the call of God on our lives.

In this sense, the revival does continue on and may continue this way until Jesus returns. It continues through many people, like me.

The Love of the Truth

What is it that keeps us from falling into false teachings and the bondage of dead religion? What is it that keeps us from placing our thoughts, our feelings, and our ways above God’s?
How can we be confident and secure in our walk with Him?
I submit to you that the answer is in having a love of the truth.

But in a day when everyone says that truth is relative, how do we judge between someone’s opinion or belief and something of eternal significance?

God’s Word is the called the Sword of the Spirit (Heb 4:12).

It alone has the power to separate soul (what I think, want, and feel) from spirit (what God thinks, wants, and feels), opinion from fact, truth from lies, eternal from temporal, and good from best. It alone has the power to change us.

Jesus Himself is called the Word of God made flesh (John 1:1). When Pontius Pilate asked the age old question, ‘What is truth’? It was staring him right in the face (John 18:38). He didn’t want to recognize it.

We must learn to be people who love truth.

When we find the treasure of truth, we must guard it zealously. We like the man who found a great treasure in a field must be willing to sell everything we have, so to speak, and go and buy that field because of the treasure in it (Matt 13:44).

We must be willing to lose everything for it. This is the way of the kingdom.

The scriptures clearly say that in the last days, men will not have a love of the truth.

Look at the warning that the Apostle Paul gives to his son in the faith, Timothy.

1 And so I solemnly urge you before God and before Christ Jesus–who will someday judge the living and the dead when he appears to set up his Kingdom: 2 Preach the word of God. Be persistent, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. 3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to right teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and follow strange myths. 2 Tim 4:1-4 (NLT)

People will no longer have an ear for sound doctrine. They will look for teachers to tell them what they want to hear, not what they need to hear.

As faithful ministers of Jesus Christ we must feed the people of God things that are good and nutritious for them…the milk and meat of the Word, not merely what they like or what they are interested in.

Whether they reject the truth or not is not our problem. It is each person’s personal decision. Our job is to “preach the word.” It’s exactly in this “foolishness” that the power and wisdom of God is seen (see I Cor 2 & 3)

If we don’t gain a love of the truth, a taste for it, a quest for it, a stomach for it; we will leave ourselves open to deception. If all we look at is success or the fact that something works, then we are open to delusion.

Even when mighty signs and wonders come, we may be in awe, but we will not have the capacity to discern the teaching and character behind it. If we are impressed by the outward displays of power only, we will not seek to understand the underlying motivation.

9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2 Thess 2:9-10 (NKJV)

We need to receive a love of the truth if we have not gained it already. Let’s ask God to give it to us.

Let’s commit ourselves to always humbly submitting our thinking and the thinking of others to the standard of God’s Word.

Let’s not let the success of something or the outward power displays instantly draw us in with oohs and ahhhs. Let’s commit ourselves to making a habit of evaluating every teaching in the light of God’s Word and then go about speaking the truth in love.

By doing this, we will become known as a people of God’s Word, a people who love the truth.

We Become What We Behold

You may have heard the scripture that speaks about us beholding the Lord and being changed into His image from one new revelation to the next, but many of us don’t realize that if we “behold” other people, many times we become like them.

Why is this important?

As believers, we can behold different aspects of the the Lord through his people. Each person in the Body of Christ has been given different giftings. And each one has different experiences that have made them who they are today.

If you can find someone who is doing what you feel called to do in God; if they have found the right balance between their calling and their family life; if they have overcome the very obstacles that now stand in your way to getting you to the place that you feel that God is calling you; then it would be wise to “behold” their way of life.

Learn from their mistakes and their victories. If you can see someone else doing what you want to do-maybe even where you would like to do it, you can see the possibilities of what God is calling you to do and become what you behold.

Missional: From Beggar to Ambassador

Before we came to be known by Jesus Christ, we were people considered by God “naked, poor, wretched, miserable, and blind.” (See Rev 3:17). Who me? Yes you! And me!

As human beings, it is easy for us to have a high estimation of ourselves apart from God, but who are we comparing ourselves to?

Each other?

What would happen if all of our lives, even the secret parts, were laid bare for the world to see? Would everything be as noble and pure as we made them out to be? We would see that we desperately need a Savior.

When we give our lives to Jesus Christ, we become new creations. All of the old things have passed away. We are no longer called beggars, but saints of God. Most Christians know this truth. But even beyond that, we are called to something much higher than many of us realize.

We are called to be ambassadors!

Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. (2 Cor 5:17-20)

We went from being the lowest of the low to being called to speak for God! Who is sufficient for such things?…speaking on God’s behalf!

But what does he want us to say? What does He want us to emphasize?

Politics?

Current Events?

Culture?

His message is one of reconciliation, one of people moving from being an enemy of God to peace with Him because Jesus, the Son, paid the price for us to be free. If you are a Christian, someone took the time to plead with you…to pray and then act. Now God is seeking to plead through you to the people around you. He literally begs through us.

‘See what has been done for you! See the price that has been paid for you! You will only find true life when you lose your old life and find life that Christ purchased for you. An abundant life free from the penalties of disobeying God, a life full of peace and satisfaction despite your circumstances, and the freedom to be who your Creator truly created you to be.’

We, the former beggars, have now been called to represent this message.

  • To go to people as ambassadors and implore for them to be reconciled to God on Christ’s behalf.
  • To not be ashamed of this message, but to speak as though we know we have been called to represent greatest of all kingdoms and governments.
  • To live of life of worthy of nobility and honor.
  • To realize that our calling is higher than any of us could fathom.

Nothing in our old way of life can compare to this calling. Nothing we left behind is worth going back to.

Will we take up the challenge and go from being beggars to ambassadors, to live the “missional life?”  Will we live our life “on mission with God?”

Things We Think About

How much of what we think about everyday has eternal significance? There came a time in my life when I stopped all of a sudden and said, “Hey, what’s life really all about”? “Who am I, why am I here, and where am I going” are three questions that everyone should ask themselves …sooner rather than later.
