“The Kenyan economics expert James Shikwati, 35, says that aid to Africa does more harm than good. The avid proponent of globalization spoke with SPIEGEL about the disastrous effects of Western development policy in Africa, corrupt rulers, and the tendency to overstate the AIDS problem.”
This is an intriguing article from a young African that made me think about the role of governments in alleviating the suffering of other nations compared to the role of the Church.
To me, the invisible Church is still the hope of any nation, not a government. God alone has the power to change the human heart and give wisdom where there was none before. As scripture says, “Righteousness exalts a nation.” I believe that we as the Church in the West need to come along side, empower, and assist our brothers and sisters in Africa when they need us, but many times our well meaning aid does more harm than good.
If we only run to their rescue without helping them take ownership of the problem, then we are only creating an unhealthy dependence that stifles their creativity and ingenuity to make the problem better.
